About the Mary V. Beck Archive

Mary V. Beck's life and career are a testament to her dedication to public service and community involvement.

Born in 1908 to Ukrainian immigrants, she became a lawyer and her early work as a social worker and juvenile court investigator laid the foundation for her historic political career. As the first woman elected to the Detroit City Council (1949-1970) and its first female president, Beck broke barriers and served as a role model for women in politics. Her commitment extended beyond the political arena to her cultural roots, where she worked tirelessly to support the Ukrainian diaspora and highlight the plight of Ukraine under Soviet rule. Her recognition with the St. Volodymyr Medal (Ukraine) and her induction into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame underscore the lasting impact of her contributions. Beck's legacy continues to inspire, reflecting the power of leadership and the importance of advocating for one's community and heritage.

UAAM was gifted with a collection of photographs documenting her family and political career. The museum also has a collection of her scrapbooks as well as her hat & purse collection.
